Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Thy sight, O LORD, my Strength and my Redeemer.
Psalm 19:14

"Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old times, `Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths.' But I say unto you, swear not at all: neither by Heaven, for it is God's throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; neither by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be `yea, yea' or `nay, nay'; for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
Matthew 5:33-37

Either make the tree good and his fruit good, or else make the tree corrupt and his fruit corrupt; for the tree is known by his fruit. "O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things; and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the Day of Judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned."
Matthew 12:33-37

Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man, but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man."

. . .Then answered Peter and said unto Him, "Explain to us this parable." And Jesus said, "Are ye also yet without understanding?

Do ye not yet understand that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the drain? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart, and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: these are the things which defile a man. But to eat with unwashed hands defileth not a man."
Matthew 15:11, 15-20

Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with Him in glory. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth: fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience, in which ye also once walked, when ye lived in them. But now ye also put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Do not lie one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of Him that created him. . .

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT...
Profanity, Swearing and Cursing

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to use in edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Ephesians 4:29

At the bottom of this page I have added a very long list of scriptures referencing one's mouth - either how to speak or how not to speak. After identifying this long list of scriptures it is obvious that God knew the tongue would be one of the greatest problems man would have. The words we speak can either be a blessing or they can be a cursing - to others or to oneself. "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. (Proverbs 18:21) Most often we speak without any thought of what is coming out of our mouths. We are conditioned from society to speak lingo which is frequently an abomination to God. When people use the common 4-letter words and the like they are belittling to themselves. People think they are looking good in front of their friends or it makes them feel like a big person to say such words and there is no civil law against it. However, using these 4-letter words makes a person look cheap, uncouth, no culture or class, uneducated. What is more important than that is how it effects one's relationship with Jesus Christ - one's personal relationship and the witness to others. We have many observers and when they see a person proclaiming to be a Christian but talking like the rest of the world, then they become disappointed and discouraged because why would they want what they see?

If Jesus were physically standing in front of you, hanging out with you for a day, such as we see in the movie "The Perfect Stranger," would you still be using those same 4-letter words? I bet you would not! Let me say right now, you do not see Him, but He is with you and standinig beside you - hanging out with you everyday. He hears how you speak with others. He see's your witness.

No man is perfect, except Jesus Christ but the meaning of being a Christian is to be a "follower" of Jesus Christ. The Christian walk is about a life of learning to live like Christ. The bible teaches us to speak as He spoke and that requires thinking about every word that comes out of your mouth. "The heart of the righteous studieth how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things. (Proverbs 15:28) When our brother is in the wrong, we are to tell him first in private. (Matthew 18:15-17) We are also taught to love others. Part of loving others is holding our Christian brothers and sisters accountable for their actions and the words coming out of their mouths.

I personally do not see the connection with "good gosh" or "darn" as Betty Miller talks about below, but I am referring to the stronger profane words. If you sit around listening to foul-mouthed talk everyday, then you are feeding your spirit filth. If you assemble yourself with other Christian believers then you become accountable to each other. Reading the bible, listening to praise and worship music, talking to God feeds clean and godly things into your spirit, into your mind, and into your heart. For what comes out of the mouth was first planted in the heart.

Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the outflowings of life. Proverbs 4:23

"O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Matthew 12:34

Foul talk comes from Lucifer. God never spoke that way, but the devil does!!! If you are dealing with issues of the tongue, then you need to get on your knees before God and ask him to help you, even deliver that foul mouth spirit from you, and ask God to help you speak words of hope, love, encouragment, and blessing for yourself and others.

CURSE WORDS REVEAL THE CONDITION OF A MAN'S HEART

by Betty Miller | bible.com | May/June 2000

"Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man." Matthew 15:11

"Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man." Matthew 15:17-20

Jesus taught in the Bible that when a man curses or uses profanity it is a sign of evil that was in that man's heart. It is popular today for both men and women to curse. They never think of it as an evil condition in their heart, but rather a small thing that everyone does. These small words of cursing the Bible says, will defile the whole man if they are not repented of and stopped. Cussing and using the name of the Lord in vain causes one to become defiled.

Popular movies and T.V. are responsible for causing society to accept foul language as the "norm." They portray cursing as a way to vent anger and tell people off. The very attitudes behind cursing show that it is not right as cussing is used to demean and put down people. These words can be mild expletives to horrible blasphemies. Since the devil is the one who inspires these evil utterances he causes people to use our Lord's name in the most ungodly ways.

In the modern definition of cursing, usually people use the name of Jesus or God in vain and swear with curses such as "go to hell" or "damn you." These words clearly show it is an evil coming from the devil. Have you ever wondered why people do not use the names of gods of other religions when they curse? The names that the devil hates and uses people to voice hateful curses are "God," "Christ," "Jesus Christ" and "Jesus." Terms about hell and heaven are also used in derogatory ways. The very misuse of these words should prove the existence of God and the reality of a heaven and hell.

Even Christians have been tricked into using bad expressions when they are upset. They are take-offs of the Lord's names such as: "Geeze" or "Jes" (short for Jesus), "Good Gosh," "Gosh Darn," "Lordy." This is known as "shoot cussin." There are other terms used, which we will not repeat, as they are vulgar profanities. However, these illustrations make the point.

Many good movies have been ruined for Christians because the script writers thought adding profane language (which they refer to as adult language) somehow made the movie more realistic. Adults nor children should use bad language if we are to be like our Lord. We do not have to use curse words to emphasize our intentions.

But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him." Colossians 3:8

"But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil." Matthew 5:37

If swearing and cursing have been a problem in your life ask the Lord to forgive you and deliver you so that your words may be good and loving words full of grace and truth. He will help you overcome this problem through His power.

"O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment." Matthew 12:34-36

"Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer." Psalm 19:14

Hearken unto me now, therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth. Proverbs 7:24

. . .for my mouth shall speak truth, and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them. Proverbs 8:7-8

Blessings are upon the head of the just, but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked. . .The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life, but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked. . .Wise men lay up knowledge, but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction. . .The tongue of the just is as choice silver; the heart of the wicked is of little worth. . .The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom, but the froward tongue shall be cut out. The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness. Proverbs 10:6, 11, 14, 20, 31-32

The counsels of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood, but the mouths of the upright shall deliver them. . .A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth, and the recompense of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him. Proverbs 12:6, 14

A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth, but the soul of the transgressor shall eat violence. He that guardeth his mouth keepeth his life, but he that openeth wide his lips shall meet destruction. . .There is he that speaketh like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise is healing. The lips of truth shall be established for ever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment. Proverbs 13:2-3, 18-19

The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright, but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness. . .The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge, but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness. . .A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit. . .A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth, and a word spoken in due season -- how good it is!. . .The heart of the righteous studieth how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things. Proverbs 15:2, 4 14, 23, 28

The preparation of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD. . .A divine sentence is in the lips of the king; his mouth transgresseth not in judgment. . .The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips. . .He that laboreth, laboreth for himself, for his mouth craveth it of him. Proverbs 16:1, 10, 23, 26

The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook. . .A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for blows. A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul. . .A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the harvest of his lips shall he be filled. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Proverbs 18:4, 6-7, 20-21
