When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you [any one] that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, [or] that useth divination, [or] an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things [are] an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.

For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so [to do]. The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.

And the LORD said unto me, They have well [spoken that] which they have spoken. I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, [that] whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require [it] of him.

But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?

When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that [is] the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, [but] the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
Deuteronomy 18:9-22

But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries. But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
Acts 8:9-13

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PROPHET AND A PSYCHIC?

ANSWER

Let me first state the answer this way and then I'll explain. The difference between a prophet (or prophetically gifted person) and a psychic can be stated or discerned according to:

  • Source
  • Certainty
  • Simple Obedience

WHAT IS THE SOURCE

Where you get your information makes all the difference in the world. If you intentionally tap into the spiritual realm with no intention to hear from God, your source is wrong.

God was clear on His feelings about this:

"Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead." - Deuteronomy 18:10-11 (NIV)

HOW "CERTAIN" IS THE WORD

Many are unaware that a true prophet (who is usually accurate) can still, every now and then, make a mistake when prophesying. In the same way, a psychic, going to the wrong source can get it "right" (though his source is wrong) now and then also. Nevertheless, ONE of the ways to know if a person is getting information from God is that they tell you this is from God, and also that the information is most often accurate. Another way of saying this is that, while prophesying they are correct more times than they are incorrect.

However, even if a true prophet misses it once in awhile, the Bible tells you not to be afraid of that person. Just because a person makes a mistake doesn't mean he or she is a false prophet or a psychic. It only means they are still learning to hear accurately.

"If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him." Deuteronomy 18:22

IS THERE SIMPLE OBEDIENCE

We all make mistakes. All of us. None of us is without sin either. But a prophet or prophetically gifted person will be found to be seeking to obey the Word of God at all times. A psychic will not. The most important obedience is found in the first part above; with a prophetic person, only God is sought for supernatural information, not some other "power."

Remember again though, as this is very important -- if a prophet misses a word now and then, that is not disobedience..."
